Dogs find no greater joy than going on adventures, spending hours outside with their humans, and ending the day curled up in one of the many Whistler townhouses, apartments or chalets, waiting for the next exciting escapade. Whistler is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and this includes our canine best friends. With many pet-friendly activities, dog walking/sitting, public water bowls, and treats behind counters, your dogs are sure to have just as wonderful of a lifestyle as you! Here are a few of Whistler’s top outdoor activities for you and your K9 pal.
Snowshoeing
When the snow covers Whistler’s many hiking trails, strap on some snowshoes and take your pup out for a walk in the winter air. If you have an elderly dog, the Valley Trail is just right and always located close to new Whistler listings. With over 40km of mainly flat trails, the Valley Trail is a great option for beginners and joy-seekers. For the more adventuresome, head to Callaghan Valley’s Whistler Olympic Park which offers more than 30 kilometres of marked trails (over 15 kilometres of which are dog-friendly). If you’re looking for something near to the Village, Lost Lake Lodge, or The Marquise, try the Lost Lake trails. Don’t have worry if you don’t have snowshoes, they are available for rent at the Cross Country Connection, located at the Lost Lake Passivhaus or at the Whistler Olympic Park Day Lodge.
Tip! Ask the staff about the best trails to go on for that day – as not all trails are groomed every day.
Cross Country Skiing
In addition to snowshoeing, the Callaghan Valley also offers an amazing cross country ski experience for both humans and dogs. With over 130km of trails (30 kms dog-friendly) set on a 7,000 hectare landscape. Seasons passes are very reasonable and recommended for the avid skier. You can even get a pass for your pup! Ski rentals are also available at the Day Lodge. This activity is a sure way to give your dogs the best Whistler experience – the pace, other dogs, and snow will bring them overwhelming joy!
Tip! Be sure to bring a headlamp as this route is not lit and it can get dark early.
Backcountry Touring
Another option beloved by locals and visitors is to take your dogs out into the backcountry for a day of touring! The Sea to Sky Corridor has lots of trails that are perfect to do together, among the favourites are Cayoosh Hut and Joffre Lakes.
Tip! if your dog is not familiar with skiing, your skis and even the terrain can be a hazard for them.
